The Influencing Narcotics Use from a Criminological Perspective: A Study at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Rehabilitation Center in Tanah Merah, Samarinda

Abstract

This article discusses the underlying problems and contributing factors from a criminological perspective regarding narcotics users at the BNN Tanah Merah Rehabilitation Center in Samarinda. Drug abuse is categorized as an extraordinary crime because it not only damages the physical and mental health of users but also contributes to increased criminal activities in society. Criminologically, individuals become involved in drug abuse due to the interaction of various complex factors, including personal, family, social, and economic influences. This issue is particularly relevant in East Kalimantan, especially around Samarinda, which is vulnerable to illicit drug trafficking routes. The high prevalence of drug abuse necessitates comprehensive rehabilitation efforts. As a frontline government institution, the BNN Tanah Merah Rehabilitation Center plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of addiction through medical and social rehabilitation programs. This study employs a normative juridical approach with descriptive analytical methods to examine the factors of drug abuse based on criminological theories and rehabilitation efforts implemented at the center.
